With 􂀀% of its total 􂀀 annual commercial vehicle (CV) volume coming from the overseas market (i.e., outside South Korea), Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is one of the global top 􂀀 medium-duty and heavy-duty (MD-HD) truck and top 􂀀 light city vehicle (LCV) manufacturers by volume.

Through vertical integration and collaboration under the corporate umbrella, HMG is expected to leverage the benefits of cost saving and knowledge sharing to make inroads into the global CV market at a CAGR of 􂀀% during 2014–2022. However, the strengthening Korean Won beyond KWR 􂀀– /USD can significantly impede this growth.

The average price/GVWR of HMG’s CV portfolio is considerably higher than that of global manufacturers in certain regions and/or segments; this is the possible reason for the lower sales of its MD-HDs than LCVs. HMG needs to address this issue if it aspires for higher market share. To achieve growth globally, HMG will need to develop feature-laden MD-HD platforms to attract value truck customers in the global market.

CV research and development (R&D) spend needs to focus on creating value trucks with better fuel efficiency, global regulation compliance, better human machine interfacing (HMI), and baseline telematics/safety technologies for global applications.

Challenges with establishing quality completely-knocked-down (CKD) and semi-knocked-down (SKD) assembly partnerships in the Middle East and Africa are likely to restrain swift business expansion in these regions.
