Country Profile – Bangladesh

Country Profile – Bangladesh

Bangladesh is located Southern Asia, bordering the Bay of Bengal, between Myanmar and India.

The country’s demographic profile is very young, with a median age of years. With a vast majority of the urban population of migrants, who mostly live in poor settlements, urbanization will continue to pose a challenge in Bangladesh’s development.

Bangladesh is one of the world’s most densely populated countries.

The economic growth has been strong but relatively uneven across the country. It is a lower middle-income country with a per capita GDP of US $􂀀 (2014); it aspires to be a middle-income country by 2021.

Recently, the country has succeeded in achieving a steady reduction of poverty incidence, with a steady rise in the number of people moving above the national poverty line.

The country’s economy has experienced significant structural transformation with the US $􂀀 billion-plus export of the ready-made garments (RMG) sector.

Through its Vision 2021 policy, the Government is trying to focus on approaches that address income inequality, an intensive manufacturing sector, investment in human capital for overseas workers, girls and women’s health, education and empowerment, urbanization, social protection systems, environmental sustainability, and good governance.
