The 􂀀 major German original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will account for close to 􂀀% of the vehicles with 48v capability by 2025 in Europe and North America. While in Europe alone these 􂀀German OEMs will account for close to 􂀀% of all 48v capable vehicles.

Bosch and Continental have an exhaustive 48v portfolio while other suppliers have at least enabling technologies for 48v, and to further boost their portfolios, an application that is often either in powertrain or chassis.

Volkswagen Group is expected to garner more interest than any other OEM group in 48v primarily because of its luxury sibling Audi’s 48v offering. By 2025, Volkswagen Group is expected to have volumes in excess of 1 million for its 48v offering in North America and Europe combined, far exceeding its competition.

With carbon emission reduction being one of the main drivers for 48v adoption, apart from performance boost, the disparity in carbon emission reduction goals of key global regions is a major reason why Europe is expected to lead the way for dual-voltage systems until 2025.

About this report

OEMs are looking for various means to reduce the CO2 emissions required for 2020 and 2025. The 12v power-net can no longer sustain the electrical load that present day top-end vehicles use. Any new addition to the electrical load will require an increase to the power-net capacity, so OEMs are considering migrating to a 48v power-net thereby using 2 voltages. The 48v power-net also manages to reduce vehicle weight, thereby reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Heavy-duty functions are expected to port to the new 48v power-net. This study investigates the current and future market for 48v power-net in the passenger vehicle market including adoption challenges. The study period is 2014 to 2025 while the forecast period is 2017 to 2025.
