Worldwide pipe market to approach 31 billion meters
The world pipe market is projected to expand 5.0 percent per year to about 31 billion meters in 2015, a deceleration relative to the 2005-2010 period. This slowdown can be almost entirely attributed to China, the world’s largest pipe consumer. After growing rapidly from 2000 to 2010, Chinese pipe demand is expected to rise at the average worldwide rate through 2015. As growth in China’s massive market slows, global pipe sales will rise at a more restrained pace. However, the Africa/Mideast region, Eastern Europe, North America, Western Europe and the rest of the Asia/Pacific region will see larger gains between 2010 and 2015 than during the previous five-year period.

Advances in worldwide crude oil and natural gas production, and natural gas consumption are expected to stimulate demand for energy pipe. The agriculture and other segment will benefit from both manufacturing output gains and increases in the amount of land equipped for irrigation. Sales of pipe for construction applications are forecast to grow five percent per year during the 2010-2015 period, as global residential construction spending rebounds. Solid growth in nonresidential and nonbuilding construction activity will contribute to gains as well.

World demand to increase 6% per year through 2015
World plastic pipe demand is forecast to increase six percent annually to nearly 24 million metric tons in 2015. Consumption of products classified in the other plastic pipe segment -- including ABS, FRP and polypropylene pipe -- will expand at an above-average pace, as end users become more familiar with their technical characteristics and performance features. Increases in global construction activity and process manufacturing output will support growth. Global sales of HDPE pipe are expected to rise six percent annually through 2015 because of additional investment in natural gas distribution networks, and solid crude oil and natural gas output gains. Additionally, HDPE pipe (also ABS and polypropylene pipe) will be used more frequently in construction applications in the future, at the expense of PVC pipe. Due to this trend, global demand for PVC pipe will grow at a below-average pace.

The North American plastic pipe market is forecast to grow at an above-averager annual rate through 2015, as product sales in the US recover rapidly. Plastic pipe consumption in the US is expected to increase seven percent per year during this time, after it declined dramatically between 2007 and 2009 due to turmoil in the residential construction industry and the financial crisis. The massive US construction sector will be responsible for nearly all plastic pipe market gains during the 2010-2015 period.

Asia/Pacific to account for more than 1/2 of demand growth through 2015
Nearly three-fifths of all new plastic pipe demand generated during the 2010-2015 period will be attributable to the Asia/ Pacific region. Plastic pipe consumption in the region is predicted to rise almost five percent yearly through 2015 due to solid advances in natural gas production, manufacturing activity, and residential and nonresidential building construction expenditures. Several major Asia/Pacific countries are forecast to record rapid growth, including India, China and Indonesia. China alone will account for 36 percent of all new global plastic pipe demand between 2010 and 2015.

PRESS RELEASE

World Pipe Market to Expand Nearly 6% Annually Through 2015

The world pipe market is projected to expand 5.8 percent per year to 31.5 billion meters in 2015, a mild deceleration relative to the 2005-2010 period. This slowdown can be almost entirely attributed to China, the world’s largest consumer of pipe. After increasing rapidly from 2000 to 2010, Chinese pipe demand is expected to rise at about the average worldwide rate through 2015. Advances in North America, Eastern Europe and Western Europe are expected to accelerate through 2015, as these regions recover from the global financial crisis. The Africa/Mideast region and the rest of the Asia/Pacific region will also record faster growth, as local construction firms and industrial enterprises use pipe more intensely. These and other trends are presented in World Plastic Pipe, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.

World plastic pipe demand is forecast to increase 7.3 percent annually to 20.3 million metric tons in 2015. Consumption of smaller-volume plastic pipe products -- such as ABS, GRP and PP pipe -- will expand at an above-average pace, as end users become more familiar with their technical characteristics and performance features. Increases in global construction activity and process manufacturing output will support growth.

The North American plastic pipe market is forecast to grow more than six percent annually through 2015, as product sales in the US recover rapidly. Plastic pipe consumption in the US is expected to increase nearly seven percent per year during this time, after it declined dramatically between 2007 and 2009 because of turmoil in the residential construction industry and the global financial crisis. More than two-thirds of all plastic pipe demand generated during the 2010-2015 period will be attributable to the Asia/Pacific region. Several major Asian countries are forecast to record rapid growth, including India, China and Indonesia. China alone will account for 40 percent of global plastic pipe demand generated between 2010 and 2015. Growth in the Africa/Mideast, East European and West European plastic pipe markets will accelerate through 2015. In contrast, Central and South America will register slower growth than its industrializing counterparts as advances will be measured from a fairly high 2010 base.
