Consumer Water & Air Treatment Systems

Consumer Water & Air Treatment Systems

Growth in the US consumer water and air treatment systems market will total 5.5% annually through 2019, reaching $2.3 billion. Advances will be driven by a recovering housing market and improved levels of consumer spending. Additionally, increased consumer awareness of the benefits these systems provide, including preventing potential health hazards and improving the overall quality of water and air, will fuel growth going forward.

This report segments the consumer water and air treatment system industry by technology and product type. Additionally, the report breaks out demand into US regional sectors. Data is provided in million dollars and units for this study.

Consumer water and air treatment technologies include:
Water Treatment
Conventional Filtration
Reverse Osmosis & Other Membrane Separation
Distillation
Ion Exchange Systems
Other Technologies
Air Treatment
Conventional Filtration
Electrostatic
Ionic
Other Technologies

In water treatment, conventional filtration will remain the most prominent technology through 2019, accounting for over 50% of the value and over 80% of the volume of the market. In air treatment, conventional filtration will also be the largest category, while electrostatic systems are expected to be the fastest growing air treatment technology in volume terms through 2019.

Consumer water and air treatment product types include:
Water Treatment Systems
Whole-House
Point-of-Use
Air Treatment Systems
Whole-House
Portable Systems
Consumables
Replacement Water Filters
Replacement Air Filters
Salt
Replacement Membranes

In water treatment, point-of-use systems were the leading outlet in 2014, accounting for over 60% of the value and 90% of the volume demand. In air treatment, portable systems were also the leader over whole-house units in 2014. The most rapid value gains for consumables through 2019 are forecast for salt, supported by the number of water softeners in use.

US regions covered in the study include:
Northeast (New England, Middle Atlantic)
Midwest (East North Central, West North Central)
South (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central)
West (Mountain, Pacific)

The West will see the strongest advances among US regions through 2019, while the South region is expected to remain the largest outlet for air and water treatment systems through the forecast. A variety of socioeconomic factors, including population increases and housing construction, will support these regions going forward.

The consumer water and air treatment systems industry is relatively diverse in that the top seven suppliers of systems and consumables account for around one-third of total market share. Notably, Helen of Troy substantially increased its position in the industry with the purchase of PUR Water Purification Products from Procter & Gamble in December 2011. Leading companies in the industry include Aquion, Axel Johnson (Kinetico), Berkshire Hathaway (EcoWater), CLARCOR, Clorox (Brita), Culligan International, General Electric, Helen of Troy (Kaz & PUR), Honeywell International, Jarden, K+S (Morton Salt), Pentair, and 3M.
