Evolution and development of the Brazilian cement sector
The Brazilian cement industry decreased production from over 70 million to 52.5 million tons per year between 2014 and 2017. The sector is highly concentrated with top 6 players holding almost 92% of production. Per capita consumption was increasing steadily until 2012 when it stagnated around 350 kg/inhabitant and after 2008, cement exports have dropped to almost irrelevant levels. The cement trade balance in Brazil became negative in 2009 but the deficit decreased from US$ 176 million in 2014 to US$ 6 million FOB in 2017. Similarly, aggregates production collapsed from 741 to 416 million tonnes between 2014 and 2016, respectively.
