Evolution of the Brazilian insurance industry

Evolution of the Brazilian insurance industry

The Brazilian insurance sector was worth US$ 255 billion in assets but in light of the depreciation of the Brazilian Real, the amount has dropped to US$ 238 billion and nearly US$ 25 billion in premiums in 2017, the equivalent to 4.9% of GDP. The market is composed of two main player categories: independent insurance groups and large banking conglomerates, the latter showing higher claims index but lower sales index. Car insurance was the predominant modality in the early 2000 but VGBL has gained relevance and currently represents over 40% of premiums. Although reinsurance is a new segment in Brazil, it is showing signs of potential for the near future.
