The Brazilian banking sector and its potential opportunities

The Brazilian banking sector is estimated to have shrunk to US$ 2.4 trillion in assets in 2017 (-10% vs. 2015). Values in Reais dropped 8% between 2015 and 2017 but due to the depreciation of the Real, still sustaining positive CAGR of 4.7% in real terms since 2008. Concentration increased through mergers and acquisitions and foreign banks have lost their share in the Brazilian market. Revenues continue highly dependent on credit (around 60%) although credit volume in dollars has been decreasing in recent years. Main opportunities seem to come from classes B and C in spite of decreasing interest ranges and increasing default rates.
