Spanish tobacco sales in both retail volume and value terms remained largely stable in 2016, with only marginal declines. Despite the government policy of increasing taxes on tobacco products at the end of 2016, tobacco sales did not suffer significant declines. The government measure was taken at the end of the year, and this, together with some brands such as Marlboro and Chesterfield not increasing their prices and therefore reducing their margins, shaped the overall performance of the market...
