Soju manufacturers launched lower ABV soju variants in 2018 to attract health-conscious consumers. Category-leader Hite Jinro lowered its best-selling soju Chamisul’s ABV from 17.8% to 17.2%. Lotte Chilsung also followed by lowering the ABV of Choeumchoro from 17.5% to 17%. Both companies reformulated their existing best-sellers rather than develop a new brand to introduce a lower alcohol soju. As a result, soju becomes a lighter spirit.
