Spirits continued to lose customers in 2015, with total volume sales declining by 2%. Although whiskies put in its strongest performance of the review period, recording total volume growth of 12%, other categories such as shochu/soju suffered a decline due to their main consumers – namely older generations – reducing their alcohol intake for health reasons. The growth of whiskies was not enough to offset this decline, hence leading to a contraction of the spirits category as a whole.
