Auto lending finance companies and auto dealers offered a wide range of auto lending finance options with the Dutch closely studying the options via the internet in order to find the best possible deal in terms of interest rate.

Comparing options via the internet and strong saving culture impact on durables lending

Durables lending witnessed positive demand again in 2017 although at a lower rate than the previous year. Dutch consumers tend to borrow more for durable products but remain cautious when looking for a credit facility to purchase durable goods, in part because many people are aware of the higher interest rates involved and also because of the highly competitive retail sector.

Gross balance grows in mortgages/housing and home lending

Mortgages/housing has the highest value sales within consumer lending in 2017 as it is traditionally the most common finance method used by the Dutch to purchase a home. Gross lending and outstanding balance remained positive in 2017 in line with the growth in the housing market.

Positive prospects for the Dutch economy will result in sustained demand for consumer lending

Growth will remain positive but steady in comparison to the faster growth during the latter part of the review period when the Dutch economy improved. Consumer credit is likely to benefit from manufacturers pursuing a more diverse approach, with different lending schemes designed for different consumer needs and lifestyles.
