The incidences of polio globally is decreasing over the time due to government of the countries for creating awareness about the immunization against polio and rabies, among the population and increasing immunization camps. For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2019, North America, Europe, and some Latin America are conducting polio immunization drives and creating awareness among the population, hence this has contributed to the eradication of polio from the regions.

The incidences of rabies have been controlled in high income countries while in low income countries the government is trying to increase the immunization in stray dogs as well as providing funding to the manufacturers to manufacture anti-rabies vaccines, in order to overcome the shortage of vaccines. For instance, several people of Asia Pacific and the African regions are reported to die due to rabies, therefore, government in these regions are conducting immunization drives, in which number of stray dogs are immunized against rabies.

Market Dynamics

Polio vaccines are of two types such as oral polio vaccine (OPV) and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). OPV consist of live and weakened polio virus, which are more active than the IPV. The only disadvantage of OPV is the release of the live virus through the waste of the humans, which can spread to the non-immunized humans. Hence, government is taking an initiative of eliminating usage of OPV and increase the use of IPV gradually. Moreover, developed countries such as the U.S. have already stopped recommending oral polio vaccine since 2000. Many research and development is being carried out for the production of new IPV vaccine, which exhibits enhanced immune response against the disease as compared to the currently available IPV.

Manufacturers are indulged in the research and development of more efficient inactivated polio vaccine by addition of adjuvant to the vaccine. For instance, Fractional - dose Inactivated Polio Vaccine (fIPV) with adjuvant for increased stimulation of the immune response as compared to IPV alone. Moreover, according to the clinical trials that are conducted by the University of Vermont (sponsor) (Start date – 2019, estimated completion date – 2020, currently the trial is in phase I), fIPV along with the adjuvant, dmLT, is being tested on healthy human population in order to check the immune response in the presence and absence of the adjuvant.

Moreover, Sanofi Pasteur SA offers, IPOL, an IPV, which is prepared with a combination of three types of poliovirus such as Type 1 (Mahoney), Type 2 (MEF-1), and Type 3 (Saukett), which provides immunity against the three types of polio viruses, to the children (as young as 6 weeks of age) and in adults.

Government from different regions are taking initiative for the prevention of the spread of rabies in humans by immunizing animals. For instance, in 2019, Texas completed 25 years of dropping packets of rabies vaccine over wild-life areas and prevent the spread of the deadly virus in humans. Moreover, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services’ (DSHS) Oral Rabies Vaccination Program (ORVP) successfully distributed around 1 million vaccine doses on January 22, 2019. The program was initiated in 1995. Usually, rabies spread to humans through saliva of infected animals especially, dogs, bats and raccoon.
