Sweden has one of the lowest incidences of daily smoking in Europe and in per capita terms, consumption of manufactured cigarettes is also significantly lower in Sweden than in many other European countries . Both 2012 and 2013 recorded much stronger declines in per capita consumption as the effects of excise rises hit the market

The market can be split into four broad segments: cigarettes, smoking tobacco, cigar/ cigarillos and smokeless tobacco. Cigarettes are by far the largest segment; however their share declined slightly on previous years. This was contrary to smokeless tobacco, which achieved continuous growth to have a bigger market share than cigarettes.

In Sweden, snus usage is widespread, with a claimed consumer base of 1.2 million; the majority are male consumers.

In 2012 and 2013, per capita consumption recorded a strong decline as the as the effects of excise rises hit the market.

Imports followed an upward trend resulting from the closure of the last remaining cigar factory in the country in 1997. Therefore, exports of locally manufactured cigars and cigarillos came to an end.
