Denmark has long been an established market for cigar products despite consumption being in almost continuous decline until very recently. Following successive annual falls between 1990 and 2010, the market has been expanding since 2011 and grew almost 26% in 2012, more than 40% in 2013, and by another 22% in 2014, boosted by value cigarillo sales. Despite this, market volume is currently 56% below the level it was at the start of the 1990s, having fallen from more than 300 million pieces in 1990 to less than 150 million pieces in 2014.

Cigars & Cigarillos constitute the smallest of the three main sectors of the Danish tobacco products market, a market which itself is in gradual long term decline, having contracted from more than 11,000 tons in 1990 to approximately 6,000 tons in 2014

Small cigars/cigarillos form the largest sector, accounting for just less than 96% of the market by volume in 2014. Cheroots form the second largest sector and traditional larger cigars, which has performed poorly in recent years, takes third place

Cigar production declined almost continuously throughout the 1990s, apart from a brief respite in 1996, dropping by 34% over the course of the decade. Since then, production has been expanding quite rapidly again

The recent good progress made by the market came to an end during 2014 when a tax hike effectively removed the price advantage of cigarillos over manufactured cigarettes, resulting in a collapse in sales. Predictions are that volume consumption will drop almost 6% on 2014 levels, with per capita sales lower than 50% on 2014 levels
