Macedonia is an important tobacco grower, mainly of oriental leaf, and a significant producer and exporter of cigarettes although export trade has diminished in recent years. The market supports two manufacturers, the most important being Imperial Tobacco TKS, based at Skopje, a subsidiary of the Imperial Tobacco Group, with 61% of the market in 2014.

Overall cigarette consumption had been quite buoyant in recent years recovering from the downturn in 2010 as a result of the new smoking ban

TK Prilep is the only other domestic producer with around 19% of the domestic market but this is expected to increase

Longer term consumption is expected to gradually decline, adversely affected by a series of increases in taxes and prices as the country gears up for future EU accession
