Baby Food in Argentina
Summary
Baby food in Argentina has seen growth both in terms of value and volume between 2009 and 2015. The change in the economic conditions like devaluation of peso in December 2015, raise in interest rates effected the baby food market negatively. GDP rose by 2.1% in 2015, but is expected to fall in 2016, by around 0.8%, largely as a result of the currency devaluation, which will dampen demand. The baby food market is heavily centered on baby milks, whereas cereals being the part of staple diet and are popular among low income families occupy the place after baby milk and the wet meals are still in the struggling phase.
Key Findings
Baby food consumption in Argentina grew by 27.6% in volume and by over 300% in value between 2009 and 2015.
Milks accounted for 87% of value sales in 2015. Cereals account for 10% of retail sales, almost double the proportion they held in 2009. Wet meals claim the remaining 3% of value and 6% of volume sales.
The baby food market is currently dominated by two companies: Danone and Mead Johnson, which held a combined 70% of volume and value sales in 2015. Danone was in the leading position in terms of value with 42.9%, although it ranked second in volume terms.
Baby food is sold through pharmacies and food retailers, which include supermarkets, hypermarkets and grocery stores, with food retailers taking the larger share of the market, at an estimated 64% by volume in 2015.
