Pentaerythritol, flammable and in the shape of white crystal or powder, is mainly used in producing alkyd resin, synthetic lubricant, plasticizer and surfactant in coating industry. It also serves as the raw material for medicines and explosives.
Pentaerythritol in China is mainly consumed in alkyd resin, polyurethane (PU), synthetic lubricant and rosin pentaerythritol ester, among which, alkyd resin accounts for the largest part in the domestic consumption of pentaerythritol.
In 2015, the total consumption of pentaerythritol in China declined to 111,563 tonnes, down 35% compared with the 171,915 tonnes in 2011. What's worse, the consumption of pentaerythritol in alkyd resin, PU, synthetic lubricant and rosin pentaerythritol ester went down in 2015 compared with that in 2011.
China's pentaerythritol capacity stayed quite stable in 2011-2015, with a capacity of around 300,000 t/a.
As for the export of pentaerythritol, China has been a net exporter of pentaerythritol since 2003. In 2010–2015, its export volume of pentaerythritol has maintained over 40,000 tonnes, while its import volume kept relatively stable less than 3,000 tonnes.
