Telecom operators are facing a major threat to their business models due to the rise of OTT voice, chat and short message services. Around a billion customers globally already using these services which offer free or very low cost alternatives to traditional telephone services, and this is expected to rise to $2 bn in the next few years. The trend is already costing telecoms operators millions of dollars in revenues every day, and is only set to continue and expand. Telecoms operators are increasingly looking to partner with and incorporate OTT providers, however it remains to see whether this strategy will be effective in defending their revenues. Smart phone sales continued to be strong in the first half of 2014, with the emerging economies, and the demand for lower cost models, driving the market. Meanwhile the US and European markets for smart phones are maturing, with slower growth expected 2014-2018.The mobile application market continues to see strong growth. However some basic mobile applications are seeing cost pressures and are lowering prices, while demand for more advanced applications is increasing.
