New Zealand Telecommunications Q1 2018

New Zealand Telecommunications Q1 2018

BMI View: A recommendation from infrastructure provider Chorus that New Zealand's 5G network adopt a shared, regulated model similar to the nationwide Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) framework has met criticism from mobile operators Spark and Vodafone. While shared nationwide 5G infrastructure could be possible through the creation of a single tower company, such a move is difficult as towers are owned and managed by operators, such as Spark and Vodafone. The operators will pursue partnerships with network infrastructure providers to upgrade and construct towers in rural areas, while focusing on building towers themselves in urban areas where returns are higher.
