New Zealand Retail Report Q2 2016

BMI View: New Zealand will see positive, but not spectacular growth in the retail sector in local nominalcurrency terms as the economy continues to grow at a reasonable pace. However, because of expectedweakness for the New Zealand dollar, the sector will contract substantially in US dollar terms. Currencyweakness bodes well for tourism and, by extension, the hotel and restaurant sub-sectors. It also means thatNew Zealand consumers will be less inclined to travel and will instead spend money on consumer goodsand services at home.

Swedish fast-fashion chain, H&M, has announced plans to open its first store in Auckland's largestshopping centre, Sylvia Park by late 2016. Foodstuffs North Island Ltd has commenced construction ofthe new New World supermarket in Te Kuiti, set to open in fall 2016. In October 2015, Stride Propertyopened NorthWest, a vast new internal 100-shop NZD160mn million mall in Auckland.
