Weare targeting 3.5% sales growth for the sector as a whole in 2016, down slightly from our forecast of 3.8%growth last quarter.

Key Views

This quarter, BMI has extended its forecast period to 2020.

Over this period, we expect 24% sales growth from the New Zealand new vehicle sales market, withpassenger cars (PCs) to outperform commercial vehicles (CVs).

During 2015, New Zealand new vehicle sales rose by 4.7% year-on-year (y-o-y), to 141,659 units.

For 2016, we are anticipating a slowdown in this growth rate, to around the 3.5% mark, as householdsdeal with high debt levels, undermining PC sales, and as demand for CVs from the key Agriculture andConstruction sectors remains weak.

Toyota remained the leading brand in New Zealand, for the 28th consecutive year in 2015, selling a totalof 26,330 vehicles across all segments for a leading market share of 20%.
