BMI View: Zambia's small tourism industry is set for steady growth over the coming years as its abundant natural attractions, such as safari parks and Victoria Falls, entice more visitors to the country. However, transport infrastructure is underdeveloped, with generally sub-standard roads and airports outside of the major tourist and business centres, and the hotel industry is dominated by independent, locally-owned establishments, with major global players maintaining only a small presence. The government has identified the importance of tourism for Zambia's economy, and we expect this focus to drive investment over the coming years. The country will also benefit from increasing international recognition, and is likely to lever off its reputation as a stable tourism destination, in comparison to neighbours such as Zimbabwe, which is experiencing political upheaval. However, both arrivals and, in particular, receipts will remain low over the coming years, with Zambia regarded as a cheaper destination and remaining reliant on visitors from poor neighbours for the bulk of expenditure.
