Despite large gas reserves and considerable production volumes, Uzbekistan's gas exports are curtailed by largedomestic demand and underdeveloped regional pipeline infrastructure. This is unlikely to change in the medium term unless a newpipeline link to China sees significant progress. Uzbekistan's outdated downstream sector is attracting significant investment, whichwill expand the country's refining capacity and increase refinery utilisation rates in the new few years. As a result, Uzbekistan willbecome a significant importer of crude oil from 2021 onwards as slumping domestic oil production is unable to meet the demand.
