United States Shipping Report Q1 2016

BMI View: In 2016, we are forecasting fewer disparities between the main ports in the US in terms of bothtonnage and container throughput, as y-o-y increases more readily follow trends in the wider economy. TheUS economy is set to grow at a more rapid pace in 2015, supported by lower oil prices, a tightening labourmarket and improving sentiment, although rising external headwinds will see that growth remains relativelysubdued.

A recovery in consumer demand is welcome news to shippers over the short term and going forward asimports are set to grow steadily in 2015. The outperforming port in container throughput terms is set to bethe port of Savannah once more, with double-digit growth of 12.2% pencilled in. Meanwhile, the port withthe highest y-o-y tonnage gains is set to be the port of Tacoma with y-o-y growth of 4.7%.
