United States Petrochemicals Report Q2 2018
US production capacity is set to rise sharply, leading to the doubling of polyethylene exports over the next five years withseveral new ethane crackers and facilities for production of derivatives scheduled to come onstream. While most are clusteredaround the Gulf Coast, attention is also shifting to the Appalachian region which hosts large gas resources. Tight supplies of ethanepose at least a near-term constraint on polyethylene production and exports, while President Trump's threats to rewrite or tear upNAFTA create uncertainty with the chemicals industry urging continuity. Completion of crackers has also lagged downstream plants, while there has been a sluggish monetisation of propane resources to produce polypropylene. Nevertheless, tax reforms will providea massive shot in the arm for the petrochemicals industry with the expectation that mooted plans will go ahead and profitability willfuel investment.
