The UK market continues to develop in terms of data usage and speed, while it is saturated in the number of mobilesubscriptions. Close to 70% of households subscribe to pay-TV and there is room to grow the number of superfast broadbandsubscriptions from 12.8mn at the end of 2017. The regulator's decision to allow the deal between BT and EE has allowed BT tobecome a clearly dominant player, trailing slightly behind O2 in the number of mobile subscriptions and comfortably dominatingthe wireline market. Meanwhile, the government is keen to improve data services in the country, supporting the development ofrural connectivity, 5G and fibre. The award of mobile spectrum for 5G development is being conducted in two stages with auctionsheld in April 2018 and planned for the second half of 2019. In late May 2019, EE switched on its 5G network, leading the launch ofthe new technology in the UK, while Vodafone and Three have announced they will follow in July and August 2019 respectively.
