BMI View: UK grocery retailers are recognising the threat of online services, ramping up their own e- Commerce platforms and investing in innovative new technologies. For example, both Sainsbury's and Tesco are trialling checkout free stores using smartphone apps, as well as expanding their same day delivery networks to get to 100% coverage. Other threats come from discounters Aldi and Lidl, which continue to grow at strong rates, particularly given the uptick in food and drink prices in 2017 and carrying on into 2018 as inflation causes higher prices. Competition in the UK is heating up and grocers are attempting to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to new services and low prices.
