United Kingdom Agribusiness Report Q4 2017

BMI View: We continue to believe that Brexit will be a net negative for the UK agriculture industry due toshort-term uncertainty followed by lower revenues and increased costs owing to less favourable subsidies, trade and labour conditions. We expect grains to be the most resilient sector due to its low production costsand greater ease of diversifying trade relationships. In contrast, sugar will be a clear underperformer asthe UK will struggle to fully take advantage of the EU quota removal in 2017, while failing to offset thisloss by sourcing alternative trade partners. The livestock and dairy sectors will be able to supply a greatershare of domestic demand while benefiting from higher prices, although costs of production will also behigher going forward.

Key Forecasts

Sugar production growth to 2020/21 on the 2015/16 level: -22.0% to 5.9mn tonnes. Over the next 10years, output will decline severely as the UK leaves the EU's protected sugar market, while domestic andalternative export opportunities will only partially offset this loss.
