BMI View: The economic outlook in Uganda is improving, supported by increased agricultural production and solid public and private sector investments. This will translate to increased employment and income rates which will boost spending in the food and drink market. Significant barriers to growth remain, however, due to the very low urbanisation rate and lack of modern retailing infrastructure which makes Uganda a challenging market for mass grocery retailers. Instead informal retail, with a focus on basic, affordable staples will continue to dominate the market.
