Turkmenistan Power Report Q2 2016

Turkmenistan Power Report Q2 2016

BMI View: Turkmenistan will rely on gas-fired power generation over our 10-year forecast to 2025 as aresult of substantial domestic gas supplies combined with few gas export commitments for the country.

Growth in gas-fired power generation will boost electricity export potential for the country, but a lack ofelectricity export outlets will curb the potential for large-scale electricity exports.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

Few gas export commitments beyond the Chinese market means that Turkmenistan has few outlets fortheir gas production besides domestic power consumption.

Russia decided to discontinue its gas imports from Turkmenistan in early January 2016. The contractionin Turkmen gas demand will have a negative impact on the country's economy, which relies on gas for92% of its exports.

In October 2015, the Japanese company Sumimoto announced it had won an USD300mn order todevelop the 400MW Zerger gas-fired power plant in Turkmenistan. This deal was a part of a package ofdeals announced after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the country.
