Turkmenistan Oil and Gas Report Q4 2017

Turkmenistan Oil and Gas Report Q4 2017

BMI View: Turkmenistan's vast potential in the gas sector will remain constrained by the limited export geography and low prices. The country's hydrocarbon-dependent economy now largely relies on gas exports to China as gas trade with Russia and Iran have been halted indefinitely. Turkmenistan's hopes to diversify its gas export routes are dependent on the construction of several new pipeline connections, neither of which is likely to see a rapid progress.

Latest Updates And Key Forecasts

We forecast that the current estimated gas reserves of 7.4 trillion cubic meters (tcm) to decline to around 6.6tcm by 2026. Nonetheless, Turkmenistan will remain among the top 10 gas-rich countries globally, in terms of volume. The outlook for the country's oil sector is dimmer as depleting reserves, along with the legal uncertainty regarding the Caspian Sea and the Turkmen government limiting international presence mostly to the offshore, will restrict exploration activities.
