Thailand Defence and Security Report Q1 2015

BMI View: A military coup in 2014 has successfully imposed a short-term solution to restore order andstability under General Prayuth Chan-ocha. This interim government is set to remain in place until October2015 at the earliest, but the army will continue to play a major role in domestic politics beyond thetransition to civilian rule. Inefficient allocation of resources hampers development, but will not beaddressed by any government in the near future.

The ouster of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on constitutional grounds in May 2014 triggered a rapidescalation in civil tensions across Thailand, pitting her 'red shirt' supporters against the largely urban, proestablishment,'yellow shirts'. With the caretaker government unable to calm tensions, the military steppedin and dismissed the interim administration. Temporarily imposing martial law and a curfew, as well assuspending much of the constitution, the head of the Royal Thai Army, General Prayuth insisted that themove was designed solely to restore order.
