Tanzania Banking & Financial Services Report Q4 2017

BMI View: The rising rate of default and late payment on loans is fuelling concern over the fate of somebanks, particularly those with NPL ratios of over 50%. While these banks are invariably small, regulatoryintervention over coming months will be crucial to preventing systemic risks and maintaining public faith inthe banking system. Consolidation within the banking industry is highly likely, but in the meantime largerbanks with NPL ratios of over 10% will be focused on improving their asset base and meeting the centralbank's higher capital adequacy ratios and capital buffers. As the industry moves towards Basel IIIcompliance, tighter regulations are likely to impose greater discipline on the banking industry to preventbanking crises emerging and the risk of contagion. Outside the banking industry, the insurance sector is setfor strong growth but from a very low base and will not be a significant generator of investment. Assetmanagement remains focused on equities, which have deteriorated in recent quarters, while the real estatesector remains under-exploited.
