Sweden Telecommunications Q3 2018

Sweden Telecommunications Q3 2018

BMI View:

We have made some revisions to the mobile outlook, as data from the regulator and operators indicate slower-than-expected growth in 2017. However, this further reinforces our opinion that Sweden is a highly mature and saturated market.Sweden is determined to be a 5G leader in Europe. The regulator PTS is to auction spectrum at 700MHz and 3.4GHz for 5G usage inlate 2018 and in 2019, respectively, and in May 2018 the prime ministers of Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Finland and Norway signeda letter of intent to cooperate on the development of 5G, with the aim of creating a common Nordic 5G space, and making theNordic region the leading and most integrated 5G region in the world. Consolidation will remain one of the key trends over thecoming years as Tele2 has announced it will merge with Com Hem, the main cable player in the country. The deal between Tele2and Com Hem is part of the convergence trend we have seen in Europe, as well as Tele2 focusing on its core markets. As bundling isnot a major driver in the Swedish market, the new Tele2 will need to be flexible if it wants to compete effectively against theincumbent Telia.
