BMI View: The outlook for the food and drink production and retail markets in Sudan and South Sudan remains poor, with South Sudan in particular facing a bleak future due to hyperinflation and food insecurity. Opportunities for foreign investors are scarce, despite the recent easing of US-led sanctions against Sudan. In both countries, the market will remain dominated by informal retail spaces and unbranded, staple products. One bright spot worth noting is rapid population growth in both markets, which will increase the consumer base. However, this needs to be accompanied by improving security, political stability and economic expansion.
