Sub-Saharan Africa Infrastructure Q4 2019

Sub-Saharan Africa Infrastructure Q4 2019

Key View:

Our growth outlook for the SSA region has dimmed somewhat following downward revisions to our forecasts for anumber of countries in the region over H119, including the largest markets Nigeria and South Africa. We now expect averagegrowth of 5.5% y-o-y in the SSA region in 2019, which would be the lowest regional growth figure since 2010, but this nonethelessrepresents the fastest growth of any region globally, a position SSA will continue to occupy over the medium term (to 2023). EastAfrica will continue to outperform in terms of sub-regions, with Ethiopia the fastest-growing market but Uganda, Rwanda andTanzania also performing well, driven by a strong pipeline of projects and efforts to enhance regional integration. In contrast,Southern Africa will underperform, dragged down in particular by South Africa where the construction sector is facing significantdifficulties which will see a contraction in the industry continue in 2019. Zambia, Namibia and Botswana are also set to see slowgrowth over the medium term.
