Sri Lanka Tourism Report 2018
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has a promising outlook despite being positioned in the highly competitive Asia-Pacificregion and surrounded by high-performing tourism markets such as Thailand and Vietnam. The protracted three-decade civil warcame to an end in 2009, and the structural challenges are subsiding and giving way to organic growth potential. The stronggovernment support for the tourism industry is providing necessary impetus for infrastructure investments and industrydevelopment, albeit from a nascent stage of development. Sri Lanka is gradually gaining more prominence at the regional andinternational tourism levels, with a growing number of Chinese and Indian visitors flocking to the country, driven by rising regionalincomes, growing demand for air travel and improved transportation connections. Furthermore, the tourism industry is beginning toattract more foreign investment, which should increase competition in the market and pressure the large domestic hoteliers tooptimise their levels of competitiveness.
