Sri Lanka Autos Report Q2 2016

BMI View: We continue to believe that a combination of new import valuation rules and higher car taxeswill lead to slowing growth in Sri Lanka's new vehicle sales market over 2016, from the elevated levels seenin 2015. However, given strong domestic demand and the possibility of further interest rate cuts, we believethe market can still grow this year, with commercial vehicle sales outperforming passenger car sales.

Key Views

New-vehicle sales will grow by at least 25% over 2016-2020, with total sales over 115,000 units by 2020.

We expect slightly stronger growth in commercial vehicle sales than in passenger car sales over2016-2020, but passenger car sales will remain the majority (75%) of all vehicles sold in Sri Lanka.

The motorcycle segment will remain the single largest part of the wider autos sector.

German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) had signed an agreement to build a local assembly plant.

Indian automaker Maruti Suzuki is in talks to open a production facility in the country.
