Spain Water Report 2015
BMI View: In spite of the tepid economic recovery and the ongoing demands for independence from theCatalan region, we expect overall extraction and consumption levels to fall from 2017 onwards due to thedual effect of rising environmental awareness, shrinking household budgets and limited extensions ofexisting water networks due to lack of funds and an incoherent, under-regulated sector.
Spain's water sector is highly developed. Water supply networks and sanitation are of a relatively highquality due to the application of advanced technology, and water tariffs are some of the lowest in the EU.
However, there is a great deal of disparity between regions in terms of water availability due to thegeography of the country. Significant investment is required to improve water supplies and reduce pollutionissues. However towards 2019, we expect to see dropping mains consumption and production as moreconservative usage habits in both domestic and agricultural consumers start to come into effect, andinfrastructure improvements curtail losses to some extent.
