Spain Defence & Security Report 2018
Spain's defence priorities are to modernise their armed forces to be more interoperable with NATO allies and to be ableto contain and resist threats from jihadist terrorism and mass illegal immigration. To this end, the Spanish defence budget will growsteadily in nominal terms to 2026 in line with gradual economic recovery, but will be restricted by long-standing governmentindebtedness. As such government debt on existing military programmes and some design-based setbacks mean that newprocurements will arrive slowly in the next few years. Spain's defence industry boasts technologically advanced capabilities in avariety of segments - particularly naval, aerospace and electronics. It is also integrating with other European defence industriesthrough R&D programmes under organisations such as the EDA and OCCAR. The sector is becoming increasingly export-focussedand financial constraints in Europe mean that new markets are becoming vital to sustain Spain's industry, consequently, the MiddleEast and the Asia/Pacific account for a large and growing share of Spain's export market.
