After a volatile 2017, medical device market access will improve only slightly in South Africa in 2018 hindered by thesluggish economic growth outlook, with the latest GDP growth reading reflecting that South Africa has entered into atechnical recession as the economy recorded two consecutive quarters of negative growth. However, the establishment of theSouth African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), which will become fully operational in 2018, and other recentregulatory developments will improve the regulatory environment and support market growth. Domestic production will continueto grow in sophistication, but the vast majority of the market will remain dependent on imports.
