BMI View: Our forecasts for the South African freight transport sector are positive across all modes in2016 - air, road, rail, and through the country's ports, despite challenging external and domestic headwindswhich will continue to weigh on economic growth over the coming years. The China slowdown in particularwill continue to weigh heavy on the economy and in turn on freight transport volumes through the miningsector in particular.Headline Industry Data

Rail freight growth will be 3.1% in 2016, to 232.03mn tonnes. In 2017, growth will be 3.3%.

Road freight volumes are set to expand by 4.6% in 2016, to 619.32mn tonnes. Growth will be 5.8% in2017.

Air freight volumes will expand by 2.2% to 1.57mn tonnes in 2016. Growth will be 2.5% in 2017.

2016 total trade real growth is forecast at 4.3%. In nominal terms, growth will expand by 0.8% toUSD211.32bn. Nominal growth will continue in 2017 at 4.9%, with trade value rising to USD221.7bn.
