South Africa Consumer Electronics Q1 2020
Despite a small consumer electronics manufacturing segment, the South African market remains heavily dependenton imports of finished products. We expect household income growth to weaken in the near to medium term on the back of lowerthan anticipated economic growth and a weaker rand. This will weigh on spending in South Africa's challenging consumerelectronics market, particularly on demand for PCs, computer hardware and TV sets. Despite consumer spending decline, smartphones will continue to cannibalise connected device market share from tablets. Larger smartphone screens and betterfunctionality have made these higher-priced products more essential purchases in consumers' minds, while the emergence of newsub-USD50 smartphones adds further pressure for vendors.
