BMI View: We believe that the Singaporean retail sector is well positioned for growth over the next fewyears on the back of a low unemployment rate, rising disposable income and a strong tourism industry. Assuch, we are forecasting a strong rise in household spending across all retail sub-sectors. Owing to the highcost of living in the city state we expect the highest proportion of the household budget to be spent onhousing & utilities throughout our forecast period. Personal care & insurance; recreation & culture; andtransport also taking a substantial share, as might be expected from a developed, sophisticated market.

Economic headwinds pose a distant but real threat to the progress of the retail sector especially due to thecontinued slowdown in the Chinese economy.

Singapore's economy remains relatively robust. This will ensure that household spending remains strongand we believe there will be continued room for growth over the coming five years. We are currentlyforecast the average net household income to reach an impressive USD91,066 in 2015, with 45% ofhouseholds falling into the top wage bracket of USD75,000+. By 2019 more than 57% of households areexpected to qualify for this top income bracket, which, along with the USD50,000-plus group represents thekey demographic for increased household spending on luxury and branded items. We forecastcorresponding growth in household spending on personal, insurance and other; restaurants and hotels;recreation and culture; and transport.
