Singapore Freight Transport and Shipping Q4 2018
We anticipate slightly muted y-o-y growth in road and air freight in Singapore over the short term, while the city-state’sport will also register a low-key level of box and tonnage throughput growth as these modes reach something approaching fullcapacity, making large levels of growth hard. A global trade war is currently the largest obstacle facing Singapore’s freight industry, which serves the export-orientated city-state. Although we envisage US president Donald Trump’s recent introduction of tariffs willhave a limited impact on Asia’s terms of trade, there could be a trade war should Trump attempt to target China with restrictivemeasures. Singapore defence minister Ng Eng Hen has criticised Trump and China for taking ‘unilateral actions’, reflecting concernfrom smaller countries about being caught in the wake of any trade war.
