Saudi Arabia Water Report Q1 2015
BMI View: We have substantially expanded our forecasts for the Saudi Arabian water sector, and nowcover losses, desalinated water production and non-mains consumption. These additions have resulted inthe revision of our existing forecasts, and we now 1.5% growth annually in extraction between 2015 and2018, a 1.3% growth in consumption, and decline in water losses reaching as much as 4% in 2018, asinvestment into infrastructure and improved regulatory overviews start to bear fruit.
The Saudi Arabian water sector remains one of the most active in the region and offers some of the greatestopportunities to private sector participants. In particular, the continued growth in desalination projects andongoing water reclamation developments offer significant potential. However, the country continues to beconstrained by limited fresh water resources and rising domestic and industrial demand. Desalination isexpensive and requires vast electricity resources. Moreover, electricity generation itself uses significantvolumes of water in the cooling processes for thermal generation, and although Saudi Arabia is increasingits solar generation, additional industrial demands are weighing on water resources.
