Saudi Arabia Retail Report Q2 2015

Saudi Arabia Retail Report Q2 2015

BMI View: Low oil prices and the death of King Abdullah have not had a noticeable negative effect on thegrowth of the Saudi retail sector and the overall economy. Instead, the market is projected to grow at a fastpace over the next five years. The country's large and affluent population will reward both domestic andforeign retailers as the retail industry grows and diversifies.

Saudi Arabia remains one of the world's most stable monarchies despite international criticism for the rightsof women and immigrant workers in the country. However, numerous initiatives by King Abdullah haveattempted to improve the situation. The social landscape is changing in the state as perceptions about thewomen are transforming and the 'Saudisation' process continues. Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)countries, including Saudi Arabia, have one of the largest shares of immigrants of the total population in theworld. Programmes such as 'Emiratisation', 'Qatarisation' and 'Saudisation' have been implemented in recentyears to promote the inclusion of Gulf nationals in the countries' respective labour markets. Generouswelfare systems in GCC countries often act as a disincentive for nationals to look for and find jobs. In SaudiArabia, Saudi nationals only make up around 15% of the total labour force. Of all Saudis active in thelabour market, 11.6% are unemployed.
