Qatar Petrochemicals Q1 2019
Qatar's drive to establish an ethane-fed cracker with 1.6mn tpa of ethylene production capacity demonstrates that thestate believes the Saudi-led trade blockade will not have long-term consequences for its competitiveness. Moreover, it signifies thegovernment's belief that production from new development of the North Field, where much of the ethane feedstock will besources, is sustainable both financially and in terms of long-term production volumes. The recent rise in crude oil prices certainlyensures that ethane-fed petrochemicals are becoming more competitive in the production of ethylene glycol - a precursor to themanufacture of polyester - and polyethylene. While these two petrochemicals products will continue to dominate Qatar's narrowproduct slate, the industry will continue to lack the wider range of products that naphtha-based crackers can support.
