BMI View: With over 5.3GW of wind power capacity installed in 2016, Portugal remains a renewablepowerhouse in Europe and made headlines last year for running solely on renewable energy for fourconsecutive days. The financial and economic struggles, however, together with the country's limited exportabilities, have undermined the economic viability of future projects, particularly as the sector is alreadywell-developed. We, therefore, do not foresee major growth across the market within our updated 10-yearforecast until 2026, with the possible exception of solar power that is increasingly living up to its potential.
Forecast And Latest Updates
For 2017, we expect only slight capacity growth on the wind market of just 2.2% with stronger growthlevels of 25% in solar, no growth in geothermal (until 2026) and minor growth in biomass of 1.2%.
